Speyer Cathedral Music offers an innovative concept for children from 1½ and up. “Musicgarden – Make Music Together” is a musical-pedagogical concept that brings parents and their children together to make music. In groups that are made up of a maximum of eight pairs (parent + child), the child becomes immersed in a world of exciting sounds, and learns that he or she can make a valuable musical contribution with just his or her voice.
In this setting and through dance, communal singing and musical games, the child is free to joyfully discover his or her voice and body without the burden of prescribed performance expectations. Simple instruments such as claves, bells, rattles or drums invite the child into a world of different tones and timbres. A point of emphasis in the “Musicgarden” program is the musical interaction between the toddlers and the adults. For example, when adults sing a song, this is the strongest stimulus for the child to sing something himself\herself.
The promotion of learning in children in the early stages of their development has been deemed extremely rewarding by educational experts. All children are born with the intrinsic ability not only to sing, but also the faculty to move rhythmically. Already in utero, the child has the ability to hear and recognize melodies and the voices of parents. It is understood that the first six years of life are the most important for the mental and spiritual formation of a human being; should a child in this phase of life be brought into contact with music and musical instruments, there is the chance that he\she will later be able to make music without any inhibition.
